How To Pivot Successfully
I've been thinking a lot about the power of pivoting recently and also what that looks like in my own life. I've asked myself what is truly holding me back from trying new things which are slightly outside of my area of expertise and I should probably take the advice that I share in this video.
Feel free to share your own experiences of pivoting and redirection!

How to deal with burnout
Просмотров 296Месяц назад
I have faced burnout a number of times throughout the course of my business career and whilst initially I tried to hide what I was going through I realised that by doing so I was maintaining the harmful impact of tirelessly working within a capitalist system. I made it more difficult for myself by blaming myself when in fact it was the system that was at fault and societal pressures which meant...
How Black Women go from being The Office Pet to Company Threat
Просмотров 616Месяц назад
The "Pet to Threat" phenomenon was first coined in 2013 by Dr Kecia Thomas at the University of Georgia who "found that early in their careers, Black women received and benefited from the support of their managers and mentors-often white males-who were eager to train and cultivate them. But as these women became more competent and confident in their roles, their mentors’ attitudes often changed...

How to stop being a people pleaser

As a recovering people pleaser I wanted to share some of my tips on how to stop being a people pleaser. In order to truly free oneself from the insidious grip of people-pleasing, it's important to embark upon a journey of self-discovery and dare I say it radical self-acceptance. Begin by cultivating a profound understanding of your worth, recognizing that your value is not contingent upon the a...
All publicity is NOT good publicity

"All publicity is good publicity" is one of my least favourite terms! I have a mini rant about why it annoys me so much in this video. The notion that all publicity is good publicity is a dangerous myth that can lead to significant reputational damage. While any exposure can momentarily boost visibility, not all attention is beneficial in the long run. Negative publicity, particularly when it i...

How To Unlock Your Leadership Potential

Throughout the personal branding consultations and workshop facilitations that I undertake with my clients, one common theme comes up and that is people’s hesitation at being recognised as a leader in their field. Great conversation. I would also add to this that we, whether in the States, UK or elsewhere, should also consider how these businesses treat their employees and if they are good community partners. I feel like we need more of a class analysis beyond just a racial one. These businesses are owned by specific black folk but they are not owned by the community. True community ownership is very different. That would be like coops. Yet, we (not the creator of this video) often speak of “black owned” as if the community actually owns or has some degree of ownership. We don’t in most instances. We are customers. Even if the owners are members of the community that does not mean them owning those businesses automatically positively contributes to the community any more than a non-black owned business beyond aesthetics. Most black folks throughout the world are not business owners. They are employees and thus, the major issue for most of us is not ownership as it is one of labor rights (unions, collective bargaining and so on). This even impacts the viability of the businesses in the community because the masses earnings is related to their capacity to buy goods or services. And to one of my previous points, collective ownership, we can and should explore that as well.

Support Black Business was used as a short hand way to support black employment. As in most races, black owned businesses tend to hire black workers. My X employee was white but was more comfortable around black people. So subconsciously or not, he hired mostly black people. I do too, because... Atlanta.

If someone offers you a bad contract that you accept, you are to blame and shouldn't complain. Don't accept it. You do have a choice and you are not a victim. Pool resources and create your own and you will never be underpaid again.

Navigating a corporate space and towing the line between being likeable and a walkover as a (black) woman is a constant struggle. Because we already have a hurdle. Being respected yet approachable is the best outcome if the situation will allow it. At the end of the day, it really comes down to how tight the economy is because you have to adapt to survive.

Omg you hit the nail on the head. I just started a RUclips channel and within 2 days of me finally posting videos I had 2 family members (who don’t have RUclips channels themselves) trying to give unsolicited advice. It took a lot for me to have the courage to start and all I was looking for was support. I have a long list of what I need to improve on for myself and it wasn’t the right time to start dishing out advice, just support. They haven’t even liked or commented on my videos which costs nothing but they have energy to give advice 👀

I saw you struggling at the end to define or include a certain thing that is attached to the word "self-made". I think the advancement of socioeconomic classes is the other condition that is required to consider a man or a woman self-made. An advance from upper to elite (highest class) can't really be considered self-made since the hoops required to get to that point aren't many. If it is from middle or low class to elite then I can see it being applied in that case. The upgrade from vastly different socioeconomic classes along with attaining massive wealth are perhaps the two most important parts in being "self-made."

But, on balance also the desire to want to savour and cherish being a mum and getting to know your daughter. It's always been a bit tug of war for me, the kids have won out so far lol but now that my youngest has started school I feel freer to really dig in with the business and channel more of my creativity into it. Extroverts who need attention all day long are the biggest time wasters. They wont respect your need to focus on your own work. Will get pissed off if you are not paying attention to them even if you are in the middle of work or meals. It is all about THEM. And if you set boundaries they will have temper tantrums and make you out to be rude when THEY are selfish and disrespectful.
